Lower and Middle School

The curriculum at Lampard Community School is structured and timetabled through six broad curriculum areas in Lower and Middle:

  • Communication, Language and Literacy (CLL)
  • Numeracy and Mathematical Understanding (NMU)
  • Personal and Life Skills (PLS)
  • Creative Arts and Design (CAD)
  • Physical Development (PD)
  • The Wider World (TWW)

The curriculum in Lower and Middle School covers a broad range of learning with a particular focus on developing the skills needed to support later learning, future employment and independent living. 

Reading and Phonics Schemes

The phonics taught to students across KS1 and 2 vary between tutor groups and can be personalised 1:1 with specific students.  We use Letters and Sounds where appropriate starting at Phase 1 and continue up to Phase 5 as part of daily teaching.  As part of ‘personal programmes’ students work on their phonic knowledge following a teaching programme called ‘Sounds Write’. Within class some students may work 1:1 using the programme Toe by Toe or Precision Teach which consolidates existing knowledge and slowly introduces new phonemes and graphemes. For some of our students we use Colourful Semantics. This is aimed to work on developing a child’s spoken sentence,  ability to answer WH-Questions, use of nouns, verbs, prepositions and adjectives, storytelling skills and written sentences.

Students read daily in a small group or 1:1 with an adult. We assess students against the National Bookband Criteria working from Pink level right up through to being able to read freely. When students join us we will benchmark their reading using the recognised assessment tool PM Benchmarking. Books are purchased to support this especially lower level high interest texts. Some students use Rapid Read scheme as part of a 3 week personal programme to boost their confidence and interest as they become readers!

Where phonics and reading by decoding is not appropriate students use symbols, box font, sight recognition and other strategies to enable them to read and write.

Curriculum Structure

In general, groups are taught for the majority of the time by their tutor, with a proportion of subject specialist teaching. This proportion will increase as they move up through the school. The school aims to offer students experience across the full range of the Arts both  through timetabled lessons and a range of additional opportunities. These include participation in various music, dance and drama performances; visiting theatre groups and musicians.

Similarly we offer opportunities to try out a wide range of sporting and leisure activities, aiming to build an interest in a number of areas that could be pursued outside of school and in later life. In addition there are opportunities to participate in Outdoor Pursuits as part of educational visits and some residential experiences.

Personal, Social and Health Education is considered an important part of the education we offer and it is delivered through our Life Preparation course. It deals with issues such as how to be healthy and safe, how to build positive relationships and how to be responsible for themselves and towards others. It includes elements of sex education, appropriate to the age and needs of the students [a copy of the school's Sex and Relationship Education Policy is available in the School Office].

Forest School - Tamar Class

Tamar is our Forest School Pilot class that started in September 2016.  They follow the same middle school curriculum shown in our three year rolling programme but the teacher further personalises the curriculum to meet the needs of students. The lessons are designed to be practical, experiential and engaging with as many as possible in our Forest School area or the local community. 

The teacher follows the principles of the timetable but because of the practical nature of the learning and much of it is student led, timings are flexible and highly responsive to student needs

Upper School

In Upper School the students work towards a range of qualifications in all the core subjects, English, Maths, ICT and Personal & Social Development, mainly at Entry Level. In addition to the core subjects they are able to choose from a range of options, some of which are vocationally based, leading to a range of qualifications. Aspects of some of these courses may be offered in partnership with our local mainstream schools, further education college and various other providers.

Work related learning is an important part of our Upper School curriculum and all our students participate in one week’s work experience in both year 10 and 11. We have built up good relationships with local community projects and businesses in order to facilitate this. We work very closely with Careers South West to ensure that all students receive a high standard of advice, guidance and support when making decisions about their future.

Upper School Curriculum - Autumn 2017 

RE and Assemblies

RE is not taught as a separate subject but aspects are covered through Wider World, PSD and Humanities. We aim to teach children about the major religions and encourage them to understand and respect the beliefs of others and form their own views about what they believe in. We have links with the local Church and celebrate specific religious holidays/events such as Easter, Christmas and Remembrance Day. We have a regular Assembly on Fridays, at which tutor groups take their turn to share an aspect of their work with the rest of the school. Particular achievements are celebrated at this time.
