Careers Guidance

Gatsby Benchmark 8: Personal Guidance

Schools are required to adhere to statutory guidance which states that all schools should provide independent careers guidance from Years 8 -13 and that this guidance should:

  • be impartial
  • include information on a range of pathways, including apprenticeships
  • be adapted to the needs of the pupil

At Lampard Community School students have access to both internal and external careers support and guidance.  Careers guidance is delivered by people who have completed, or are actively working towards, the Level 6 Diploma in Career Guidance and Development qualification.

External Provision:

CSW Group

CSW Group are commissioned by Devon County Council to support young people with EHCPs through their transitions. The CSW 'Transitions Contract Summary for Schools' states the following:

Recognising that transitions may take longer for young people with EHCPs we will start our support with this cohort of young people in Year 9. This will involve:

In year 9:

  • One-to-one IAG or group sessions with eligible young people
  • Introductory phone call to parents/carers to introduce the service
  • Attendance at parents/options evening
  • Collection of intended destinations and identification of any potential out of area placements
  • Completion of initial Options Appraisal report for those likely to make a transition to be shared with the school for inclusion with the annual review
  • Attendance at reviews by exception.

In year 10 we will:

  • Update intended destinations
  • Provide further one-to-one IAG for students whose situation has changed (and for those who have had an EHCP issued since year 9) including updating Options Appraisal reports
  • Attendance at reviews by exception

In year 11 we will:

  • Update intended destinations
  • Monitor plans; providing additional one-to-one IAG for those who may need it
  • Update the Options Appraisal report where this is required to contribute to the annual review
  • Attendance at reviews by exception.  

All young people making a transition at the end of year 11 will be offered additional support during the first six weeks after the transition through a named contact within CSW Group. This named contact will be available to the young person and/or the Provider should any issues arise.

Internal Provision:

Tamsin Winter is the Careers Leader at Lampard Community School and holds a Level 6 Diploma in Careers Guidance and Development. She is supported by Jo Worsley who is the HLTA with responsibility for Careers.

In year 8:

  • Group sessions centred around listening to students’ initial ideas skills and qualities and matching them to potential career pathways.

In year 9:

  • One-to-one Preparation for Adulthood meetings to record students’ ideas ahead of their Year 9 annual review.
  • Group sessions looking at options choices, linking them to career pathways, ahead of the KS4 options event. One-to-one IAG interventions are available if further support is needed.

In year 10:

  • Group sessions to look at destinations in more detail.
  • One-to-one Preparation for Adulthood meetings to record students’ ideas ahead of their Year 10 annual review.
  • One-to-one IAG interventions are available throughout the year if further support is needed.

In year 11:

  • Group sessions to look at destinations in more detail.
  • One-to-one Preparation for Adulthood meetings to update students’ goals and aspirations ahead of the Year 11 review.
  • One-to-one IAG interventions are available. Students will be referred following the annual reviews.
  • Transition to Post 16 plans are discussed with students.
